The Focus Photography Competition is and exciting and liberating opportunity for budding photographers out there to show off their skills with handling a conceptual series of images and to prove their ability within the photographic realm, it’s all about getting publicised, discussing ideas and participating in something fun! Plus, it’s free.
This years theme for the Focus Photography Competition is Identity, which is a large theme we know but let us explain. The theme is broken down into three categories and we would like you to enter an image into each section, to create one whole series of work! In other words create a trio of images which constitute each section of the theme.
The categories to which your trio must adhere are:
1.Self identity;
This is a person’s physical projection- their clothes, their family etc. A few examples of what you could focus upon are,
your physical appearance,
your surroundings,
your body,
your friends and/ or family,
family traits,
your routine,
your interests,
your personality characteristics,
Anything that makes you who you are. A lot of these examples seem to us that they could be done in a documentary or portrait photography style, but this is up to you. We want photography which really reflects your interests and ability, as well as what method you choose- film or digital. No restrictions as to if you want to use flash either, for all of the categories.
2. Public Identity;
Aspects of your life that can influence who you are or how you act, be it public aspects that effect who you are, or how you are in public/ around others. This could be something social, religious, an effect of your job- anything again, it’s all about being creative with how you approach these categories. More examples;
your job
your community
your race
your government
your society
your reputation
your staged identity- a front you put on/ your mask
3.Inner identity;
This is all about what is hidden- what don’t you show the world, what do you feel within yourself, your nerves your animosity, your insecurities;
What is hidden- your animosity, your insecurities
your dreams/ ambitions/ fantasies
parts of your personality that you restrict from public view
your spiritual side
your monsters/ nightmares
even past memories that you believe have effected who you have become- a lot of these suggestions can be staged.
These images can can be linked or separate, but just keep in mind that to win we are looking the best series that fits the theme of identity, so though you must work to fit the photo’s into the categories you must also consider what they say as a whole about identity.
Along side the overall winner we will also be picking the best single image from each category as runners up, so you will have a chance to get your work featured on our website even if you don’t win the big prize!
The overall winner will get an article published about them and their work and a chance to write about their winning series that will be published on our website, plus any goodies we pick up along the way whilst the competition is running!
*To enter, email your three images (no larger than 500 mb over all) to competition@thefocusproject.co.uk Please make sure that they are clearly labelled as to what category they are for with your name and a title for each piece, or the series as a whole, and a description explaining what inspired it and why it fits the category. All images will be uploaded to the competition’s photo stream on Flickr (www.flickr.com/photos/focusproject) so you all will get your work shown!
We want practitioner’s to be able to get their work exposed and this will be a great way to get your work out there or find someone else to collaborate with, what a great opportunity! Free entry, free reign, free publicity, all you have to do is get creative and explore the theme of identity.*
Running from the 3rd of January until the 30th of June 2012
